Pray: Nigerian Christians Massacred in Horrific Attack

A series of horrific incidents escalated on June 13 when Fulani militants attacked a camp for displaced Christians in Nigeria, killing over 200 people.
Eyewitnesses reported that attackers set fire to houses and shot victims as they fled. The Fulani militants “began slaughtering people—mostly women, children, and displaced families who thought they had found safety here,” in Yelewata, Benue State. Many of the bodies were burned beyond recognition.
Many of the victims had previously been attacked and escaped from Muslim militants. Nigeria is the deadliest country for Christians, where tens of thousands of Christians have been killed in recent years.
Fulani militants seek to seize land from Christians and impose Islamic law.
Some officials say the attacks against Christians are a conflict between herders and farmers and attribute the violence to climate change.
But the militants shouted “Allahu Akbar” as they killed people with machetes and guns. Christian Freedom International’s partner in Nigeria warned that people “should not fall for a false narrative regarding climate change.”
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) recently held a hearing on the deteriorating conditions for religious freedom in Nigeria. They highlighted the Nigerian government’s inaction on the horrific violence, persecution through blasphemy laws, and the rise of violence from extremist groups like ISWAP and Fulani militants. USCIRF called for urgent reforms, protection for religious minorities, and for the U.S. to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).
Christian Freedom International (CFI) provides aid for survivors of Islamist violence and support to recover and start new lives. In 2024, we sent hundreds of petitions calling for the White House to designate Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern.
Please pray for:
- Survivors of these horrific attacks to find healing in Christ.
- Christian children who are left orphaned.
- Christian leaders to be filled with wisdom and energy to serve with godly power.
- Nigeria’s leaders to take decisive actions to bring justice and prevent further attacks
Would you take the next step and help Christians who survive Islamist attacks in Nigeria?
You can:
- Sponsor a child survivor in Nigeria.
- Support young adults at the Treasure Center, a recovery for trauma, discipleship, and training in job skills.
- Provide training for women and breadwinners, such as young adults left to care for their siblings, to start small businesses.
